Activities for the annual gathering in Washington, DC are being planned and information on activities and additional details will be updated below in the Special Events section as they become available. First Team Veterans Gathering in DC Veterans of the 1st Cavalry Division and members of the 1st Cavalry Division Association will gather in Washington, DC to honor the Veterans of our Armed Forces and renew old acquaintances. All First Team Troopers and their families are welcome to visit our hospitality room and participate in the events that happen in and around the area. A block of rooms has been secured at the Crowne Plaza Washington National Airport for the nights of 9-13 November, 2010 to provide a home base for Troopers that will attend Veterans Day activities in Washington, DC. A 1st Cavalry Division hospitality room will be located in the hotel and a small LZ Souvenir Shop will be set up by the National Capitol Region Chapter who is also coordinating a banquet to be held on the evening of Veterans Day in the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Call 1-800-227-6963 or 1-800-2CROWNE to reserve your room at the Crowne Plaza hotel prior to the deadline of 10 October, 2010 to get our special rate of $119 per night plus tax or do it on-line. Make sure that you let them know that you are with the 1st Cavalry Division. Enter the arrival date and number of nights you will be staying (use the calendar with arrows). Scroll down and click "check availability" - a page will pop up requesting individual information. You will also see your group identification. Follow the instructions on making/completing the reservation. Parking is complimentary for members of our group that are staying at the Crowne Plaza. If you stay elsewhere, you will have to pay the regular rate to park in their garage. The Crowne Plaza Washington National Airport Hotel is located at 1480 Crystal Drive in Arlington, Virginia and is close to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. They provide shuttle service to and from Reagan Airport. The hotel is located within walking distance of a Metro station and there are several reasonably priced restaurants and fast food establishments within walking distance of the hotel. The hotel does have a fully staffed in-house restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. 2nd Annual First Team Veterans Day Dinner The National Capitol Region Chapter in conjunction with the 1st Cavalry Division Association will host the 1st Annual First Team Veterans Day Dinner on Thursday evening 11 November, 2010 at the Crowne Plaza Washington National Airport Hotel, 1480 Crystal Drive in Arlington, Virginia.
We are still in the process of coordinating the speaker for the dinner but the 1st Cavalry Division Honor Guard will be present. Special Events The Association will place wreaths at the three war memorials on Veterans Day, 11 November, 2010. Times are not confirmed for the Wreath laying at the World War II and Korean War Memorial.
The ceremonies at the World War II Memorial and Korean War Memorial will be conducted by the 1st Cavalry Division Association and the we will participate in the ceremony conducted by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial with many other units and services with our Division Honor Guard standing on the Wall. The 1st Cavalry Division Honor Guard will be in DC to assist with the placement of the wreaths and at the banquet. The Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc., Chapter 227 will again host its DMZ To Delta Dance. The dance will be held from 2000 hours to midnight on 10 November at the Holiday Inn - Rosslyn at Key Bridge located at 1900 N Fort Myer Drive in Arlington, Virginia. The cost for the dance is $30 per person and includes Vietnam Veteran camaraderie, dancing, finger food, silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, free parking and has a cash bar. There is a Pre-Dance warm-up in the Dogwood Room from 1900-2000 with a cash bar and finger food. While you are in Washington, you may wish to visit other sites of interest. We strongly encourage you to take the time to visit Arlington Cemetery, the memorials to past presidents, the Smithsonian museums, and many other sights and places that record our nation's history. You will need to make reservations if you wish to go up in the Washington Monument. Visit the National Park Service web link for details. Getting around in Washington, DC can be difficult. Parking is often limited and expensive. The city has an excellent mass transit system which includes the Metro and bus service. Taxi cabs are plentiful and there are several tour companies that provide transportation around to the varied locations. Informational links are provided on this page. They may not be all inclusive and none of the private companies are being endorsed by the 1st Cavalry Division Association. Mount Vernon, the home of President George Washington, normally provides free admission to active duty military and veterans on Veterans Day.
