The Chapter

The Southeaster Colorado Chapter was chartered in 2003.

The Chapter meets on the first Saturday of each month at the Holiday Inn Express in La Junta, Colorado beginning at 1000 hours.  Meetings usually involve a guest speaker and always have great camaraderie.   Elections were held last held during the 2 January, 2010 meeting.

The Chapter sponsors a Junior Shooting Sports Program.  Children, ages 8-14, compete as individuals and as teams firing BB guns and air rifles and currently has 16 kids participating.  Shooting is done on an indoor range during the winter months.  The top shooter in October was Christopher Martinez (age 12).  This fits well with our Mounted Unit (The Bear Creek Riders).

The Chapter participated in the Veterans Day Parade in Pueblo on 6 November and posted the Colors at the Court House in La Junta on Veterans Day, 2010.  We regularly participate in the Santa Fe Trail Days Parade in Las Animas and in the Early Settlers Day Parade in La Junta.  We have hosted the Honor Guard from Fort Carson, Colorado.

Our Chapter sponsored a drive which resulted in the Colorado legislature naming Highway 10 between La Junta and Walsenburg as the "1st Cavalry Division Memorial Highway" which was dedicated on 4 August, 2007.   The measure was sponsored by State Senator Ken Kester, R-Las Animas.  The Chapter regularly participates in parades in the area and has won several competitions for floats.   We currently have a Veterans Outreach Program for veterans in Nursing Homes, a program to supply needy school children with basic school supplies and a program to supply active duty military personnel with phone cards.  Chapter members receive the Thunderhorse Newsletter each month.

Public Relations for the Chapter are handled by John Campos, 1308 Lewis Ave., La Junta, CO 81050, (719) 384-0379
