The Chapter
The New York-New Jersey Chapter was re-chartered in 1986 and has one sub-chapter, the New York Troop. Our Chapter is a fraternal organization that promotes camaraderie and friendship among former and present members of the First Team that live in the New York City and Northern New Jersey area.
The Chapter meets twice yearly, in the spring and in the fall. The meeting starts at 1100 hours. Our meetings normally have a guest speaker that shares their military or war experiences. We also have photos on display and provide news and veteran updates. We also have shirts, hats, books, military pins and other items that are for sale. As always, the Chapter provides lunch as well as coffee and doughnuts for the early birds. Some members bring the family, especially the kids and grand kids; it’s a great way for them to learn about our experiences and sacrifices.
At the Chapter's fall meeting we held our 25th Anniversary Luncheon on 22 October 2011 with 135 people in attendance. Besides members and their families we had ex-Prisoners of War, Service Officers from Veteran Organizations, and other Veterans from the community. Our program began with singing by the group, Wide Variety, performing songs to entertain the group and sing our National Anthem and God Bless America. A very moving part of the meeting occurred when Fred Robins read The Long Roll Muster, a tribute to our war dead, while the group performed Amazing Grace in the background. Guest speaker, Bill Richardson, spoke about his experience as an infantry soldier and as a Prisoner of War in the Korean War. We also made a special presentation to thank the Ridgefield Park Elks Lodge for their support and allowing us to use their building for our meetings.
The Chapter is trying to collect photos of our members from their time in the military as part of our “The Way We Were Project”. We want photos that include the Troopers face and in uniform. They can be from their time in the 1st Cav or any other unit. Photos may also be taken with family or friends. Please include your name, unit, year, era and location with the photos. E-mail the photos to <nynjcavalry@optimum.net> or mail them to the NYNJ Chapter, 60 River Rd., Apt E103, Bogota, NJ 07603. The photos will be placed on our Facebook page.
The New York Troop occasionally meets. Joe Panzardi is the Troop Commander.
