The Chapter

The James J. Mason, West Michigan Chapter was originally chartered in 2002 as the West Michigan Chapter and changed its name in 2008 to honor one of the men that founded the chapter, Captain (Ret) James J. Mason.  The Chapter is located in the greater Grand Rapids area with members from all periods of the Division's service.  The Chapter's purpose is to foster interest in the 1st Cavalry Division by showing "our colors" and to share our memories.  Since each member has a Chapter Jacket with a large Cav patch and a long sleeve Chapter shirt we really show "our colors".

The Chapter meets on the third Thursday of every month from September through June.  There are no meeting scheduled in July or August.  Our meetings are held in the Grand Valley Armory located at 1200 44th Street SW in Wyoming and begin at 1900 hours. Upcoming meeting dates are 16 September, 21 October and 18 November.

We have posted information about the Chapter and our meeting times in various VFW, American Legion posts and in the local Veteran's Assistance Center.  Each Chapter member has Business Cards that provide information on our meeting times to hand out.  We run the bingo game at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans on the fifth Sunday of the month.  There are an average of four or five months that have a fifth Sunday.

The Chapter provides support to the First Team during deployments by sending boxes to the Troopers.

The Chapter participates in the annual Goose Festival Parade that is held in October in Fennville, Michigan.  We receive support in the form of vehicles for that parade from the Michigan Army National Guard.
